Libraries
Built by us, stocked and run by the National Library Service of Malawi.
We partner with the National Library Service of Malawi to bring libraries to the communities that need them most. To date we’ve built four libraries in Malawi — and they have been a resounding success.
Each library welcomes around 400 visitors a day — roughly 146,000 visits a year. We site them right in the heart of poor residential areas, so people can use them without the expense of transport.

A perfect partnership
Every library we build is stocked and run by the National Library Service of Malawi, which is funded by the Malawi government and sources quality books through UK charity Book Aid International. The Service has the budget for staff and books — but not for the buildings. That’s where we come in: we fund the one-off cost of the building and take care of occasional maintenance, and the Service runs the library for the long term.
What a library includes
A library building costs around £15,000 and includes:
- Meshed windows (so books stay safely inside)
- Secure doors
- A full complement of bookshelves
