Climate Change
Our Green Schools initiative — and it's about far more than just trees.
Malawi is on the front line of climate change. Deforestation, soil erosion and increasingly unpredictable rains hit farming communities hardest. Our Green Schools initiative builds climate resilience into everything we do — and puts the community at the centre of it.
More than just trees
Planting trees matters — for shade, soil, fuel and food — and our volunteers and pupils have planted many. But a tree only survives if the community wants it to. So our Green Schools work is really about community engagement: involving families, pupils and local leaders in caring for the land around their school for the long term.
- Tree planting & nurseries — trees for shade, fruit, erosion control and sustainable firewood, tended by the school community.
- Eco-build construction — using low-carbon, locally-sourced materials such as earthbag building wherever we can.
- Environmental education — pupils learn why their environment matters and how to protect it.
- Food & agriculture — school gardens that teach sustainable growing and help feed pupils.
- Community ownership — families and local leaders involved from the start, so the green space is cared for long after we leave.
A green school is a more resilient school — cooler, greener, better fed and rooted in its community. Help us grow it.
